Writing Classes

Classes are more formal than writing groups. There's more emphasis on the technicalities of writing, such as grammar, layout, character and plot. Choose a class that's tailored to the kind of writing you want to perfect. Learn the specifics of writing for the stage, or comedy sketches, or technical manuals. You'll progress more quickly by specialising.

If there are no suitable classes in your area you could try online classes on the Internet. There is an excellent range of online courses offered by the Gotham Writers' Workshop, via their website WritingClasses.com.

WritingClasses.com is the online division of Gotham Writers' Workshop, New York City's largest creative writing school. Their dedicated faculty members teach the fundamentals of creative writing to over 6,000 students a year. Classes in NYC and online include fiction writing, screenwriting, memoir writing, nonfiction writing, business writing, TV writing, sitcom writing, novel writing, playwriting, poetry writing, children's book writing, romance writing, mystery writing, songwriting, and more. One-on-one private instruction and classes for young adults are also available. Call 212-WRITERS or visit www.WritingClasses.com.

Writing away from home?

Ever wish you could continue writing when you're away from your home or office computer?

One solution is to copy your files onto your laptop. But things can get messy when you transfer frequently from one computer to another: are you sure you're working on the most recent version?

You can get around this by using a remote access program. This lets you control your main computer from anywhere in the world. As long as your office or home PC has a broadband connection and is left switched on you can dial into it from a laptop or Internet cafe in another town or even another country. I do it all the time: I hook up to my main desktop computer in England from Internet cafes in New York and I can access all my files, operate all my software and access my e-mail. The software I use to do this is called GoToMyPC They have a free trial which shows how amazing the concept is.

So now when you're on holiday or on a business trip there's one less excuse for failing to hit your daily word target.
